Police in Benidorm, Alicante, have arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly committing four violent robberies using the “chain snatching” tactic.
After getting a lot of complaints in a short amount of time, the police started looking into the robberies that had happened with violence and the “chain snatching” method the thief utilised.
During the inquiry, the agents found out that the suspect chose his victims mostly because they were older and defenceless. He also approached them from behind and by surprise so they wouldn’t be able to defend themselves.
The suspect’s main goal was to steal the gold chains and other jewellery that the victims wore around their necks. He did this by pulling on the chains really hard, which makes it easy to sell the gold on the market.
The officers did a number of checks that helped them find a 28-year-old male who was connected to four violent robberies that used the snatch-and-grab tactic. The thief stole from women between the ages of 67 and 78 a gold chain with two rings, a gold chain, three gold chains, and a gold and diamond necklace worth €3,800.
When the suspect tried to rob a 67-year-old man again, the officers arrested him. However, an off-duty security guard called CIMACC-SALA 091 and asked for the officers to come to the site.
The agents found the person and arrested him for allegedly committing four robberies with violence and one attempted robbery.
The agents searched and seized items from the detainee’s residence in Alicante, where he had travelled to Benidorm. They took many gold chains and necklaces, which were probably stolen during robberies because they were broken.
Some of his victims got hurt because he used violence to steal jewellery from their necks.
The authorities are still looking into the jewellery they took and are still looking into the detainee’s possible connection to seven other violent robberies.
The inmate is now in the hands of the Court of Instruction on duty in Benidorm after the police followed the proper procedures.
