Orihuela’s population of around 89,000 at the end of 2025 solidified a pattern of steady population expansion. According to information from the municipal register maintained by the Orihuela City Council, the municipality is not only expanding, but doing so at an accelerating rate.
Growth acceleration in a number of rural regions and along the coast.
The Department of Statistics reports that there were 3,245 additional residents in 2025, a 3.7% increase over 2024.
Orihuela Costa’s 7.7% increase has been the main driver of population expansion. Barbarroja, Corrientes Bajas, Corrientes Medias, Los Huertos, Media Legua, Molino de la Ciudad, and Torremendo are among the outer districts where growth has also exceeded 5%.
Despite the fact that the population is obviously concentrated in two sizable centres, Orihuela City and Orihuela Costa, it should be highlighted that, aside from the coast’s notable growth, Orihuela has had one of the lowest percentage increases, growing by 1.1% to reach 33,260 residents.
However, with 30,171 residents, Orihuela Costa continues to be the municipality’s primary residential centre. Seventy-one percent of Orihuela’s population lives in these two centres.
Evolution of the population in the outer districts
With a total of 3,382 residents and a 1.6% rise, La Murada remains the most populous of the outer districts. La Aparecida comes in second with 2,298 residents and a 2.9% increase. Camino Viejo de Callosa is the only district that has shown a decline in population in 2025.
The municipality’s diversity of nationalities
In terms of nationalities, the majority of people in Orihuela Costa are still British, with Spanish and Ukrainian people coming in second and third. Moroccan and Colombian nationals are the most common in the Orihuela urban centre, after Spanish citizens. The bulk of people are still Spanish.
With 60.4% of the total population, Spanish nationals make up the majority in the municipality. But one particularly noteworthy example is the village of Torremendo, where 41% of the population is British and only 31% is Spanish.
