It’s like the Brothers Grimm’s famous story “Hansel and Gretel,” but with minor changes to the plot and the roles of the characters. First of all, the breadcrumbs were coins, and the main characters weren’t two innocent kids; they were two “bad guys” in the most literal definition of the word. Not only because of what they did, but also because one of them had been arrested for property crimes about fifty times. The National Police in Elche arrested two people for burglary at the end of the complete narrative.
Alarm monitoring centre call
At 3:20 a.m. on Sunday January 18th , the alarm company called the police station. That’s when it all started. A hooded man was seen messing with the cash register inside a bar in the centre of Elche, which set off the alarm. To avoid drawing notice, an undercover patrol was sent to the area. There, they saw that the security shutter had been broken open, and a witness in the neighbourhood said they saw a man crouching near the entrance of the pub. Once they got inside, the National Police officers confirmed that someone had broken into the cash register and asked for backup to start a search.
The path
But the police must have been shocked when they noticed a trail of coins leading out from the bar. They only had to follow it. Police from the Elche Police Station found two men just a few blocks away. One of them, who was said to have forced open the cash register, matched the description given by the alarm company. The other, who was said to have been watching the area, matched the description given by the witness who had talked to the police.
Bum bag thrown away
When one of them saw the police, he flung his um bag over a low wall, which didn’t help them stay hidden at all. The officers later found coins and two screwdrivers in the pack. These seemed to be the equipment they used to break into the cash register and the door. The authorities were able to prove that the accused criminals had stolen 160 euros, but in their haste, they left a trail of the money behind as they fled, which led to their arrest.
Background
The duty judge in Elche saw the two males, who were both Spanish citizens and 50 and 43 years old. The 50-year-old man has one thing that makes his case worse: he has been arrested 48 times before for property crimes. The other man has a shorter criminal record, but he has still been arrested thirteen times, which is not a small number.
