National Police agents have broken up a network that was involved in the illegal trafficking of anabolic steroids in the province of Alicante. This network sent out the merchandise through the mail and in places near gyms.
Three men, ages 28 to 33, were arrested in Elda, Petrer, and El Campello at the end of the operation. They are suspected of committing a crime against public health. Also, 739 boxes of different kinds of anabolic steroids and €4,545 in cash were taken during the inquiry.
The police operation had two parts, and it helped them find the primary culprit. He is said to have sent these drugs, which were disguised as legal pharmaceuticals, over the mail. He often brought things directly to customers who lived near sports centres.
Access controls for gyms and payments through apps
The inquiry started after specialised units from the Alicante Provincial Police Station checked out gyms and sports nutrition retailers. These initiatives led to the discovery of a possible illegal way to sell medications that improve performance.
The inquiry found that the main suspect sold the drugs through parcel delivery services and got paid through his bank account. Most of the time, the transactions were made through a money transfer app. There were also an average of 55 transactions each month tied to this illicit activity.
A storage area that is also a warehouse
The officers found the main suspect’s home in Elda and a storage unit in a shared garage in Petrer that he is said to have used as a warehouse. When the police arrested the suspect, he had a package with boxes of anabolic steroids and €1,045 in cash in it.
A second man, who was also implicated in the distribution, was later taken into custody. There were also searches at the storage facility and the house, where most of the seized items were found. The inquiry found that the drugs came from Lithuania and got to Spain through Poland.
A third arrest in El Campello
During the first part of the operation, detectives found out that a third person was involved and was supposedly responsible for getting parcels with anabolic steroids. After being named, he was apprehended in El Campello as the person who was thought to have committed the same crime.
The first two people who were arrested have been sent to the investigating tribunals in Elda. These courts are also in charge of the second part of the operation’s proceedings.
