Drones “Made in Alicante” are used to look for persons who are missing in the highlands where there is no mobile coverage. This is a common issue in emergency situations where time is of the essence and precision is crucial. The company WEITEC, which is part of the Alicante Science Park (PCA) ecosystem, has done a technological demonstration that opens up new possibilities for managing emergencies.
The Castelló Provincial Council and the Provincial Fire Consortium were in charge of the trial. During the test, the company used its unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to combine the people detection models made by Focalise, which are experts at smartly analysing visual and sensory inputs.
Thanks to this integration of technology, it was possible to find three persons in only a few minutes in a six-hectare region of Mediterranean or heavily inhabited forest. This area was especially difficult to navigate because of its terrain and dense foliage. According to the Science Park, the results showed that these AI-based systems can analyse data in real time and give important information that makes it much easier to make decisions in emergencies.
Important in crises
IMS Drones Intelligent Monitoring Systems ended the day by showing off its KITE system, which is made to cover enormous regions of land in a very short amount of time and improve the coordination and management of emergencies.
Esteban Pelayo, the manager of the Alicante Science Park (PCA), said that “cases like WEITEC show how valuable the Alicante Science Park ecosystem is, where tech companies work on solutions with a clear focus on transferring technology and using it in the real world.” The fact that a company in Alicante can use precision technology from the agri-food sector to help with disaster management shows how talented, adaptable, and creative people can be in our area.
