The Elche Local Police Headquarters will update its control room to make it easier to keep an eye on emergencies. Yesterday, Thursday Janaury 29th, the governing board gave a €80,000 contract to buy and set up audiovisual equipment in several important police departments and the Council Chamber. The goal is to make it easier to manage information and make decisions in emergencies like bad weather, big events, traffic accidents, and other dangerous situations.
A video wall system, which is made up of numerous large-format displays that work together as one display surface, makes all of this possible. It lets you split the space into several windows and change the content to fit the needs of the moment, unlike a regular screen. This kind of device has become an important part of control centres in the fields of security and emergency management since it gives them a complete, real-time picture of what’s going on in the city.
This will improve the Local Police’s ability to do their jobs by letting them centralise and see information from many different sources in the “critical control rooms” at Police Headquarters. These rooms will include the Crisis Room, the Meeting Room, the Operations Room, and the City Council Room. The system will be able to show video surveillance footage, city maps, traffic data, communications with other security forces, and direct connections with emergency services all at the same time. This will make it easier to respond to any major event more quickly, in a more coordinated way, and more effectively.
Business buildings
The PP-Vox coalition government called the meeting of the governing board but did not hold a press conference afterward. They said this was because only about twenty items on the agenda had been discussed, and ten of those were requests to turn commercial buildings into homes. Inma Mora, a representative, said that the Urban Planning department is working on changing the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU) to protect business areas from this type of conversion, which is becoming more widespread. After the urban planning modification, there will have to be a discussion about the future ordinance, which the local government has previously said could be used to control certain uses in some areas.
Clara Campoamor
The board also agreed to give the company an extra 15 days to finish the work on Calle Clara Campoamor. The company said that recent rains had stopped work on the site. José Claudio Guilabert, the Councillor for Public Spaces, admitted this scenario two weeks ago and said that the work would be done by the end of next month. Now, there is a definite date: February 18th. On that day, the City Council will affirm that the road will be fully open to traffic and functioning, as long as no more unexpected problems come up.
The deadline has been pushed back because the winning business asked for it. This is because there have been a lot of heavy rains in the construction area over the past month, which have delayed work at different times.
The City Council and Aigües d’Elx worked together to fix the road in Carrús last November. The goal was to permanently fix the subsidence that has been a problem in the area for more than 20 years. The project is mostly about fixing up and improving the road surface on the straight stretch of 110 metres between the intersection with Calle Francisco Miller Giner and the intersection with Calle Juan Maciá Esclapez.
Collector
One of the most important things the project has done is completely fix the sewer main, which city workers said was one of the main reasons for the sinkholes in the roadway. For years, the age and wear and tear on this subsurface infrastructure had caused cracks in houses, problems with the water supply, and damage to roads. During this time, the work took longer than planned because asbestos-containing pipes were found, which meant that a special safety plan had to be put in place.
The project is now in its last stages, with the insertion of a concrete slab to strengthen the ground and the building of a continuous slab to stop further subsidence. After that, the whole road will be resurfaced. The project has a budget of €373,000 and will make the road safer, more stable, and longer-lasting. This will make traffic flow better and make life better for people who live in the Carrús neighbourhood.
Zahorra
Also, the bidding procedure has begun to buy artificial gravel and aggregates to fix public roads, empty lots, and plots of land controlled by the government.
The starting budget for the tender is €150,000. The contract will last for two years, but it can be extended for another two years. Companies that are interested will have 30 days to send in their bids.
Easter week
The board also agreed to work together with the Governing Board of Brotherhoods and Fraternities for €108,000, which is the same sum as last year. The governing team defended their support for the group by saying that Holy Week is very important in the local holiday calendar. This is not only because it has been a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest since 2023, but also because the Palm Sunday procession has held the International Tourist Interest designation since 1997.
Sports
Lastly, the Sports Department approved a partnership with the Fundació de l’Esport Il·licità de la Comunitat Valenciana (Valencian Community Sports Foundation) to promote and develop sports activities in the city. The City Council wants to improve Elche’s image by holding events, sports clubs, conferences, seminars, and other sports-related activities. They also want to expand the number of public sports events and encourage school-aged children and adults to do sports in a healthy way.
Journalists from Croatia
One of the agenda items said that the governing board also agreed to let two Croatian journalists visit Elche without paying the public price to get into some municipal museums. They were there to “introduce the city to the international market.”
