One of the most exciting aviation events in southeast Spain finally has a defined date. The Festival Aéreo San Javier will be back on May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, 2026. It will once again turn the skies over the Mar Menor into a huge open-air stage for military and commercial aviation.
The airshow, which takes place at San Javier in the Murcia region, is one of the most popular in Spain. It draws tens of thousands of people from all over the country and beyond. Visitors usually line the beaches and promenades to watch planes fly over the shore, making it a great day out for both locals and tourists.
A place to show off Spanish aircraft
The General Air Academy, one of Spain’s largest military aviation training centres, is in San Javier. The location offers the airshow a strong institutional and historical feel, strongly tied to the Spanish Air Force and its training traditions.
Princess Leonor, who will be the next Queen of Spain, is now going through military training as part of her formation across the armed forces, including time spent at the Air Academy. This adds to the interest in the site as a whole. Even though she isn’t part of the airshow schedule, her presence has put San Javier in the national spotlight in recent years.
What you may expect
The full flying programme hasn’t been released yet, but earlier editions of the Festival Aéreo San Javier have included a combination of Spanish and international military planes, aerobatic teams, helicopters, transport planes, and exhibitions of historic aviation. Flying displays have always been complemented by ground exhibits, family-friendly activities, and a festive mood across the municipality.
