Elche set a record for separate packaging collection last year, with more than 3,000 tonnes taken from yellow containers for the first time. This result indicates the consolidation of this type of recycling as one of the fastest growing in the residential sector, bringing the municipality to an all-time high.
The growth has been consistent, peaking in July with almost 280 tonnes of packing collected. This development maintains the pattern that began with the launch of the current cleaning service in 2021, when 2,478 tonnes were collected, representing a 21% increase overall. Historically, the figures for the past year have been double those for 2017.
Container network and municipal coverage
The municipality now has 865 yellow containers for collecting lightweight packing, which are dispersed across the town centre and outlying districts. This network covers the entire town and enables garbage separation at the source.
These containers are for packaging that has been used to preserve, protect, or transport products, such as juice cartons, milk, smoothies, or soups; plastic packaging such as polystyrene trays, water, juice, milk, butter, or ketchup bottles; and containers of yoghurts, sauces, egg cartons, caps, and lids.
They also include bottles of shampoo, soap, toothpaste, creams, detergents, fabric softeners, and cleaners, as well as metal containers like aerosols, cans of preserves and drinks, food trays, bottle tops, and aluminium and plastic wrappers.
The continued expansion of these figures shows increased public awareness and the strengthening of Elche’s selective collection methods, which are increasingly important in managing the municipality’s total rubbish.
