A British man has been convicted of attacking three national police officers at Alicante-Elche airport in 2022 and will be expelled from Spain for 7 years and will also have to pay the officers 54,540 euros in compensation.
According to the facts proven in the ruling, to which this media has had access, the individual violently attacked the agents who were trying to control his access to the border area, hitting them, spitting and causing injuries of varying severity, including fractures and damage that required surgical interventions.
The Criminal Court No. 1 of Elche sentenced this British citizen to 51,260 euros in fines and two years in prison, which will be replaced by his expulsion. The other agent, who was represented by the Prosecutor’s Office, will receive 3,280 euros. Two of the agents were represented by the JUPOL union in Alicante through the Sánchez Navarro Abogados law firm.
The union has shown “deepest concern about the constant increase in attacks on officers in the exercise of their duties and the lack of protection we suffer from this type of crime.”
The police force, JUPOL, says that officers are “unprotected” and that attacks on them are “a worrying trend that increases year after year.”
How Much
“We demand that the Government and the Ministry of the Interior take urgent measures to stop this escalation of violence against public servants responsible for guaranteeing public safety,” they said.
In this way, they stress how important it is to see the National Police as a high-risk job, as this would “enable better security measures, legal protection, and health care for officers in the event of attacks suffered in the line of duty.”
To stop being attacked, they say the situation is “unacceptable” and want effective solutions, such as “punishing the aggressors more severely,” using the attack at the airport as an example.
Lastly, JUPOL says it will keep “fighting” for the risks that come with its job to be seen as real. “We cannot continue to allow violence against officers to go unpunished or to be minimised with sentences that do not reflect the seriousness of the events,” they say.
