In the early morning, National Police officers from the Citizen Assistance Group at the Marbella Police Station aided a woman in labour. Three police officers were on duty in Marbella on Tuesday night, May 20th, carrying out tasks for the Citizen Security unit in an unmarked vehicle, when they noticed a citizen exiting his vehicle in the middle of Avenida Severo Ochoa, near a hospital.
In the given incident, the police approached the individual to determine what was happening and offered to assist him. The man was a 36-year-old Ukrainian who did not speak Spanish, but he was able to communicate through gestures that his partner was in the car and that she was ready to give birth.
The police soon discovered that the pregnant mother was feeling ill and concerned about the impending arrival of her child. When the officers observed the baby’s head was starting to appear, they calmed her down and took control of the situation.
With no time to transfer her to the hospital, the National Police placed the mother in the back seat of the car and gave her instructions to prevent causing injury to the baby.
While officers aided with the birth by delivering directions in English from the side of the car, another officer encouraged the woman to control her breathing and push as contractions began. Finally, the woman gave birth while one of the officers helped deliver the baby, who began crying immediately.
When the paramedics arrived, the officers cleared the way for the medical personnel, who watched them cutting the umbilical cord and assisting the mother.
Finally, the National Police helped the mother get out of her vehicle and transported her to a neighbouring hospital.
