Yesterday, Sunday June 8th, Valencia’s Oceanogrà fic and the environmental volunteer society Eucrante released ten turtles born on Dénia beaches in the summer of 2024 as part of a conservation campaign for the species Caretta caretta, also known as the loggerhead turtle, at Punta del Raset.
This symbolic act was intended to commemorate World Oceans Day while also raising awareness about the importance of protecting marine biodiversity.
The event was attended by Oceanogrà fic technical and educational teams, who were in charge of increasing awareness about science, conservation, and care for the marine environment among the many interested individuals who took part in the release, particularly families with children.
This species is endangered mostly by unintentional captures while fishing and marine plastic pollution, but also by disturbance of beaches such as those in Dénia, where they breed. As a result, the public’s role is critical in preventing disturbances during the laying season while also assisting with rescue and monitoring activities.
As a result, this summer saw the commencement of the first volunteer campaign. This includes organising nightly parties to look for nests or footprints that suggest a turtle has come out onto the sand to deposit its eggs before the machinery responsible for removing the sandbanks passes by in the morning.
