A British police officer has been suspended after a video surfaced of him urinating from a podium at a crowded pub in Benidorm. Alex Bates, 30, a police officer for around eight years, was in the popular Spanish city enjoying a weekend with friends when the event occurred.
According to people close to the group, they had spent the majority of the day drinking before visiting Benidorm’s bars and clubs. At one point, Bates climbed atop a podium, unzipped his pants and began peeing towards the busy Calle Gerona, which is known for its vibrant nightlife. The scene was met with shouts and laughs from those present.
After finishing, the cop escaped as security personnel tried to apprehend him. He flew back to the UK earlier last week, where he is now facing disciplinary action.
South Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Department has opened an investigation into the event. A representative for the department said: “This behaviour does not reflect the high standards of professional conduct that we and our communities expect from a police officer, regardless of whether they are off duty or abroad.” It was also confirmed that the officer’s line manager had been notified, and the video had been reviewed to formally begin the investigation.
The Bates case is hardly the only recent incident involving British nationals in Spain. A British couple was arrested at Ibiza airport after racking up a four-figure cruise ship debt and departing the ship without paying. The couple was travelling on the Costa Toscana and was detained on accusations of fraud after being forced to disembark at the Balearic island’s port. The cruise liner had left the French port of Marseille two days before arriving in Ibiza.
