A 23-year-old Moldovan visitor was arrested by the Castellón Guardia Civil after reportedly removing two stalactites during a visit to the Les Coves de Sant Josep natural monument in the Vall d’Uixó region.
According to Guardia Civil officials, the individual is still in police custody but has already been questioned. Officers accuse him of a crime against historical heritage; the detainee is scheduled to appear in court in the coming hours.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, as the young man was taking a guided tour of Europe’s longest navigable underground river.
He was then surprised by a worker on the site, who reported the event to security forces, who responded and apprehended him.
The Les Coves de Sant Josep cave formed during the Middle Triassic period and is primarily made of limestone. According to the official website of this site, which has been designated a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the origin of the river and the end of the cave are unclear, but archaeological sites show human involvement dating back around 17,000 years.
