A 70-year-old man died while swimming at Els Tossals beach in Guardamar del Segura. Around 12:30 p.m. today, Saturday June 14th, multiple beachgoers reported the existence of a body floating in the sea, alerting the Guardia Civil and health services.
The alert and rescue occurred at the northern end of Els Tossals beach, just a few metres from the Rebollo de La Marina beach in Elche.
The individual lacked identification and arrived at the beach by bicycle via the La Marina trail (Elche). The swimmer went to the beach alone; therefore, he has yet to be identified. Paramedics, the Guardia Civil, and Guardamar Local Police have all responded to the location.
Els Tossals is a length of beach without a lifeguard service—previously, under the old lifeguard contract, and now, under the present one, which has only been in effect for a few days, since last Wednesday. Lifeguards from Elche’s beaches of Pinet, La Marina, and El Rebollo, which cover a busier region than Guardamar, approached the scene on a quad bike.
At about 2:20 p.m., funeral services from the Institute of Forensic Medicine removed the body.
