Torrevieja firemen worked hard early this morning, Thursday June 19th, to ensure that no one was inside a vehicle discovered entirely submerged and with its lights turned on in the Campo de Cartagena waterway in the municipality of San Miguel de Salinas.
The Consortium’s firefighters received the call around 4:50 a.m. There was a submerged crushed car in the canal, and it was unclear if anyone was still inside.
Firefighters summoned the assistance of a municipal paddler, who brought the equipment to the accident site to remove the vehicle out of the water. A firefighter was able to gather the appropriate equipment for its rescue and eventually confirmed that there was no one inside. The vehicle sustained a serious frontal accident, had a flat tyre and a deployed airbag, and its lights remained illuminated.
The security forces have not stated if they are now searching for the occupant or occupants of the automobile, but they were not the ones who contacted the Guardia Civil, since the Fire Department responded with the presumption that there could be individuals inside.

Although traffic on the post-transfer canal’s service lane is illegal, the Segura River Basin Authority has not taken steps to prevent numerous vehicles from utilising it as an alternate route to avoid traffic on other highways. It is also highly popular among cyclists.
The Tajo-Segura post-diversion canal is currently operating at full capacity, carrying water to San Miguel de Salinas, Orihuela Costa, Pilar de la Horadada, and Campo de Cartagena. Under these conditions, the flow circulating through the canal exerts a high drag effect, making it difficult to escape the water due to the concrete slope of the aqueduct’s caisson.
