Four hours. That was the length of the hunt for the octogenarian, a former firefighter who went missing early yesterday afternoon, Wednesday June 18th, on the banks of the Segura River near the La Azacaya Bridge.
The man was discovered alive, leaning against a fence on a block of land near the river, apparently bewildered and beyond the established search zone, which had not yet reached that place. A large operation was launched to find him, spanning land, ocean, and air, and included the use of drones, dogs, and even a helicopter.
The Murcia Fire Department, Civil Protection, National Police, Local Police, the Molina de Segura canine unit, and a significant number of volunteers on foot, including off-duty firefighters, all participated in the emergency operation.
At approximately 6:00 p.m. in the mid-afternoon, authorities dispatched the helicopter to expand the search area and locate the missing man. However, when a cyclist passing through the region saw the missing man, he alerted the authorities. “When I watched the news about his abduction on television, I rode my bike from my home in El Palmar to the location where the search was underway. I had a sense I knew where the man could be. So I went directly to the spot that came to mind. “I started shouting his name loudly, and soon he answered me,” said a very distraught Juan Carlos Carrión, the biker who found the man. “I’m still not sure how the man got there because it’s a remote, difficult-to-access location with lots of bushes and thorny plants.” It was quite miraculous. I’m not sure what would have happened to the man if he had been there all night, considering the amount of rain,” said the cyclist, a clinician at Murcia’s Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital.
Second search
This was the second search in the Segura River since a man was observed plunging into the riverbank last March, and his body was discovered days later following an extensive search. Civil Guard divers also participated in the search.
