Those planning a trip between Alicante and Italy will have difficulties today, Friday June 20th. The transalpine country’s general strike threatens to cancel multiple flights from Alicante-Elche airport to locations including Milan, Rome, and Venice.
The strike in Italy, called by unions such as USB, Cub, and sgb, among others, to protest Giorgia Meloni’s government’s public spending, will affect all modes of transportation in the country, including airports.
Although Alicante-Elche airport only serves seven Italian destinations, the general strike today could disrupt nearly a dozen flights between Alicante and Italy. According to airline timetables, Alicante has four departing flights to Italy and five inbound. All except one are subject to cancellation.
The nationwide strike could result in cancellations and delays from midnight to 11:59 p.m. on Friday. Ground staff and airport professionals in Italy, including baggage handlers, drivers, and terminal operators, will participate in the union-called walkout.
Ryanair’s operations to Italy on Friday face jeopardy, as it is the sole airline operating from Alicante to Italy on that day. This impacts departures from El Altet, which include connections to Rome Fiumicino, Treviso-Venice, and a flight to Milan. The other scheduled Alicante-Milan flight cannot be cancelled because it would depart at 18:40, one of the time slots safeguarded by Italy’s National Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC).
However, the five arrivals may be affected because they do not occur between 7 and 10 a.m. and 6 and 9 p.m. Thus, the strike puts two flights from Rome, one from Treviso, and two from Milan at risk. There are nine flights scheduled for both departures and arrivals, but only one of them is guaranteed to operate on Friday.
In fact, some airlines have already announced flight cancellations for today, so it’s advisable to monitor advice from airlines, particularly Ryanair, for the latest updates on these connections.
