The Molinos del Calvario bonfire in Torrevieja awoke on Monday, June 23rd, to unpleasant news: numerous ninots had been stolen from the “Elements” children’s campfire.
The Bonfire Commission made a public statement denouncing the “regrettable events” that transpired on the night of June 21st-22nd: “This act represents not only a lack of respect for the immense voluntary and selfless work of those who make this tradition possible but also a great disappointment for our children’s representatives, who celebrate these festivities with all the enthusiasm and commitment they deserve.”
“It’s disrespectful to the voluntary and selfless work of those who make this tradition possible, but also to our festivals and the values we try to instil in children.”
The Calvario Mills Bonfire Commission in Torrevieja issued the following statement:
This committee, which has been operating since 1992, is the only one that continues this tradition in Torrevieja. The organisers have requested respect for their festivals and traditions, as well as the ideals they aim to instill in children. They do not deserve to have their efforts and excitement undermined by acts of vandalism that do not reflect the true celebratory spirit.”
The letter continues by thanking other committees, communities, and festival organisations for their support, and stating that “we will continue working harder than ever to ensure our Hogueras remain a symbol of unity, joy, and popular culture.”
