The head of PACMA, Javier Luna, witnessed “the alarming presence of minors among the public” at the Bous a la Mar festival in Dénia on Sunday, June 6th. Luna went to the portable bullring set up by the municipal council following a rally by animal rights activists in the city streets demanding the festival’s termination. “Allowing children to witness the suffering of animals is a form of indoctrination into violence,” he continued.
The protest, organised by the PACMA Animalist Party and Dénia Animal Save, drew dozens of people from across Spain to condemn the suffering that animals endure through this practice, in which “stressed bulls are forced to throw themselves into the sea, which can cause them to drown.”
Criticism of PSOE and Compromises
Furthermore, on Monday, the Animalist Party accused the Dénia City Council and the Generalitat Valenciana of encouraging young people to abuse animals by allowing and organising shows that normalised animal cruelty. PACMA holds the PSOE and Compromís, the municipal council’s parties, accountable for sustaining a “tradition” that is incompatible with a contemporary and ethical society.
“The PSOE and Compromís claim to prioritise education and animal welfare but use public funds to perpetuate atrocities.” It’s an unacceptable display of political hypocrisy,” Luna said. “We demand that they cease organising and subsidising the Bous a la Mar” concerts. Their involvement in animal maltreatment is abhorrent, especially when minors are present in these types of performances. What values do institutions transmit? The president of the political party advocating for animal rights also made this statement.
PACMA has stated that it will continue to condemn these incidents, both institutionally and on the streets. The Animalist Party reiterates its commitment to prohibiting all bullfighting events and urges citizens not to be involved in animal pain or its normalisation among future generations.
