The Guardia Civil seized 2,249 cartons of illegal cigarettes hidden in two armoured doors and carried by a man in a van that arrived in Alicante via boat from Algeria. The man had tampered with the doors to create a space inside and conceal the unlawful goods.
According to the Guardia Civil, officers from the Fiscal and Border Section stationed at the port of Alicante inspect cargo transported in vehicles travelling on ships and arriving in Spain via that route on a regular basis, ensuring compliance with legal requirements to protect the European Union’s and its member states’ economic interests, as well as citizens’ safety and security.
Thus, during a check of cars that had just arrived at the customs inspection terminal at the port of Alicante, the Guardia Civil discovered a van loaded with numerous things of varying size, volume, and character that had not been declared.
Immobilised cargo
The merchandise included furniture and food, and the agents requested that the responsible party complete the procedure, giving him a deadline in accordance with Regulation (EU) 925/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council, which establishes the EU Customs Code, and immobilising the cargo in the interim.
Meanwhile, police from the Guardia Civil’s Fiscal and Border Analysis and Investigation Unit thoroughly searched the possessions, discovering two metal doors modified to conceal contraband tobacco. The authorities discovered 2,249 packs of undeclared tobacco that the culprit attempted to bring into Spain and for which he was reported.
