The strike in Ryanair’s handling services (Azul Handling) has been extended to all Spanish airports where the company operates, according to FeSMC-UGT. The strike, which was initially intended for Madrid-Barajas, was escalated as a result of “consistent non-compliance with the rules and continued precariousness.”
The strike will commence on August 15th and will now impact all Azul Handling bases and work centres in Spain. The strike is scheduled to occur from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and 9:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. Subsequent to the initial three consecutive days (15th, 16th, and 17th), it will remain in effect every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until December 31st.
UGT condemns the absence of measures to enhance the working hours of permanent part-time employees and encourage stable employment. The imposition of overtime hours, “even under duress,” and the application of sanctions that are deemed exorbitant are also mentioned. In Spain, a strike against Ryanair is being prepared for the summer.
Non-compliance with resolutions issued by the Joint Committee of the Sectoral Agreement, particularly in relation to bonuses and job security, as well as restrictions that the union regards as illegal, are additional factors that exacerbate the conflict. These restrictions include the reinstatement process after sick leave and the adjustment of working hours to accommodate family and work-life balance.
José Manuel Pérez Grande, the federal secretary of the FeSMC-UGT Airline Union, regrets that Azul Handling continues to maintain “a strategy of precariousness and pressure on the workforce that violates basic labour rights and systematically ignores union demands.”
Consequently, it is imperative that sanctions be immediately lifted, current regulations be adhered to, and genuine negotiations be initiated in order to enhance the working conditions of over 3,000 employees throughout the nation.
