A national holiday, which is paid and non-recoverable, is observed in all Spanish autonomous communities during the month of August. The Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which takes place tomorrow, August 15th, is a Friday. This will provide many labourers with a three-day holiday in addition to the weekend.
The festive atmosphere is nearly universal, as thousands of cities and towns throughout Spain observe their patron saint festivals on this date. In contrast to the hospitality industry, which experiences its busiest days in most cities, it is also one of the few holidays during which many businesses are closed.
After August 15th, there will be no national holiday until All Saints’ Day, which is observed on a Saturday this year, on November 1st.
