The National Police have arrested two men, aged 28 and 41, in Madrid for allegedly breaking into a vehicle belonging to a parcel delivery company in Alicante. The men are accused of stealing 29 shipments from the vehicle.
A delivery driver for a parcel delivery company filed a complaint with the police, reporting that 29 shipments had been stolen from his van. This prompted the police to initiate an investigation. He was delivering one of the shipments when the theft occurred. The thieves exploited this opportunity to gain entry to the compartment containing the packages by creating a small hole adjacent to the security lock. They then used this opening to unlock the door and access the contents.
The officers verified that the thefts were committed in a vehicle that was rented at the airport and was occupied by three individuals.
The Madrid-Barajas Airport is a location where roving groups that are dedicated to this type of crime frequently rent vehicles to perpetrate robberies in order to impede police investigations.
The robbers had meticulously tracked the victim’s delivery van, perpetrating the robbery at the most opportune moment, as officers discovered during the investigation. One of them served as a lookout, donning attire that was reminiscent of that worn by delivery carriers in order to avoid attracting the attention of the victim or other road users.
Officers at Madrid-Barajas Airport were contacted by investigators, and they apprehended two of the robbers as they attempted to return the rental vehicle for an alleged larceny.
The Madrid City Court of First Instance has received the detainees, who have a history of numerous property crime convictions, following police investigations.
