The high temperature warning level for the southern coast of the province of Alicante has been elevated to red by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) for tomorrow, Sunday, August 17th.
The social media account X (formerly known as Twitter) recently published an update that elevates the orange alert from a few hours ago to an extreme risk. The red alert is currently in effect in the province of Valencia on Saturday.
Emergency measures and municipalities that have been impacted
The municipalities of Torrevieja, Elche, Benidorm, Bonalba, Novelda, Albatera, Orihuela, Guardamar del Segura, Santa Pola, Alicante, and l’Altet are located in the most exposed area of Alicante. It is unsurprising that certain municipalities, including Alicante and Elche, have already implemented special emergency plans in anticipation of the anticipated high temperatures.
AEMET emphasises the importance of exercising “common sense” and providing special attention to the most vulnerable individuals, as heat can have severe health consequences.
The agency also cautions that the risk of forest fires is at an extreme level due to the high ignition rates that result from the high temperatures. In the mountains and during any outdoor activity, it is advisable to exercise extreme caution.
The province experienced a maximum temperature of 37.1 degrees yesterday
On Friday, the province’s greatest temperature was recorded in Alcoi at 37.1 degrees, followed by Pinoso at 36.4 degrees. The temperature in the capital, Alicante, has reached 35.7 degrees.
The entire inland coast of Valencia is affected by the red warning that was issued this morning, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 42 degrees between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m.
