The Epidemiology Service of the Directorate General of Public Health and Addictions has provided the most recent information regarding the food poisoning outbreak that was declared at the Cavanna Hotel in La Manga.
28 cases were reported in the initial alert. The number of individuals afflicted has increased to over 100 throughout the day. These individuals are experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and vomiting, which are occasionally accompanying a fever.
Five units have been mobilised by the ‘061’ emergency service to provide on-site care, and a total of 20 patients have been transferred to the Emergency Department of Santa LucÃa Hospital for evaluation. With the exception of two individuals who are currently under observation due to the aforementioned symptoms, all have been discharged.
Salmonella has been identified as the causative agent in the initial microbiological results of the admitted patients. The Epidemiology Service and examiners from the Food Safety Service conducted the corresponding epidemiological investigation and implemented prevention and control measures at the facility this Sunday as part of the public health protocol.
More specifically, the hotel’s kitchen has been temporarily suspended, and a comprehensive cleansing and disinfection of the facilities has been ordered. Catering will be temporarily provided by an external catering company to ensure that visitors receive the service they expect.
The majority of symptoms onset after lunch on Saturday, August 23rd, indicating a common food-related cause, a concentration of cases over time.
The investigation is currently focused on the collection of food samples and the collection of stool cultures from food handlers in order to determine the precise source of the outbreak and to implement definitive corrective measures.
