Alicante Council will take immediate action at Santa Bárbara Castle due to the “serious danger detected and imminent risk of landslides” on Benacantil. The council has issued a “exceptional emergency” contract to secure and confine unstable material in the mountain’s granite massif, beneath the main body of the citadel.
According to the municipal file, during the urbanisation work for the pedestrian link from Ereta Park to the entry gate to Santa Bárbara Castle, regions on the slopes of Mount Benacantil were discovered to be at high danger of rock falls. In light of the technical information and “given the real possibility of rock falls from the rock mass within the scope of the aforementioned work,” the work has been completely halted beginning August 19th, 2025, with all work and personnel access suspended to avoid potential risks arising from possible landslides.

Given the circumstances, the Local Government Board approved an emergency contract on Tuesday “for the protection and containment of unstable rock material,” in order to “avoid the situation of serious and imminent risk and danger from landslides that compromises the safety of people.” The contract will be for €1.5 million.
