Beginning this month, those who lived in the United Kingdom between 1980 and 1996 will be permitted to donate blood again. According to data provided by the Alicante Transfusion Centre, this decision is based on scientific advancements as well as strong safety and traceability measures that now ensure transfusion safety.
For decades, people in the United Kingdom and other areas affected by bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), popularly known as “mad cow disease,” were unable to donate blood due to the potential of transmission of the human variety. However, the Ministry of Health has approved the relaxation of this restriction, after the Scientific Committee on Transfusion Safety’s favourable recommendation.
The exclusion requirements for stays in BSE-affected areas from 1980 to 1996 are no longer in effect. People who were previously unable to donate due to health issues will be able to do so again, as long as they meet the standard donation requirements.
