Guardia Civil officials arrested a 47-year-old man as part of the Safe Commerce Plan when he was found inside a tavern in Torrevieja (Alicante) while allegedly attempting to steal the establishment’s daily takings, which were closed to the public at the time.
The incident occurred in the early hours of August 24th, when officers from the Benemérita Main Post in this municipality, who were providing citizen security services, were summoned to the location, where security personnel had detained a person who had entered the establishment after hours.
Officers arrived on location and identified the detainee as a man with a history of property crimes. After checking the cash register, they discovered that €810 was gone, according to a police statement.
During the search of the detainee, officers discovered the same amount of money in his right trousers pocket, which was confiscated and restored to its rightful owner. It was also verified that the individual allegedly entered the institution by pushing one of the entry doors, which resulted in his arrest on the spot.
During the transit to the police station, the arrested man became “very aggressive” and even damaged the police vehicle. According to the Guardia Civil, he “maintained the same violent attitude” inside the cell and caused “further damage” to the facilities.
The detainee has been charged with burglary and two counts of criminal damage. Following the inquiry, he was hauled before the Duty Court of the Torrevieja Judicial District, where the judge authorised his release on bond.
