A stunning catastrophe occurred Saturday afternoon, September 12th, in El Campello, leaving an unexpected scene and considerable property damage on the Muchavista beach promenade. A vehicle parked diagonally on Avenida Jaime I, at number 80, reversed out of control at high speed, breaking through all safety obstacles and getting stuck in the stone wall that separates the promenade from the sand.
Initial theories suggested that the driver “possibly” misplaced the pedal, forcing the car to abruptly reverse. Along the way, the truck pulled down the tram’s protection barriers, damaged the tram platform, and eventually slammed into the promenade wall, creating a startling image for all present.

The incident, which could have had considerably more devastating repercussions, occurred during a period of high traffic on the promenade, but no injuries were recorded. However, the material damage is extensive, including protection fences, tram lines, and the brick wall itself, which was severely damaged.
Local police officers who went to the scene were taken aback by the vehicle’s ability to surpass so many barriers meant particularly to safeguard pedestrians and public transportation. “The route the car took is extremely complex,” they added, making the incident even more stunning.
Furthermore, the damaged piece of the wall was only fixed a few weeks ago following a vandalism report in the early hours of August 1, thus the Council will need to intervene again to rebuild the affected section.
Images from the site show bent fences, torn-off railings and a car parked near to the curb. Fortunately, there were no pedestrian injuries.
