National Police officers arrested a 51-year-old man at Alicante-Elche Airport on a valid European Arrest Warrant (EAW) issued by Italian authorities for cocaine trafficking.
According to a statement issued by the Superior Police Headquarters, the arrested individual was intercepted as he prepared to board a flight to Morocco by authorities in charge of inspecting and supervising passenger departures at Alicante-Elche Airport.
After searching police databases, officers determined that he had a valid EAW issued by Italian authorities since April 2024 for a narcotics trafficking offence. The offences for which he was wanted took place in the Italian municipality of Legnago in 2006.
The fugitive was involved in the sale of narcotics such as cocaine and hashish, and he faces up to eight years in prison.
Following police investigations, the detainee was handed over to the Central Investigative Court of the National Court in Madrid, which is in charge of processing his extradition.
