A joint operation between the Alicante Local Police and the National Police to combat illegal street vending at an unlicensed street market on Calle del Cuarzo in the Colonia Requena neighbourhood resulted in 52 fines, one arrest for stolen goods and robbery with violence, and nine complaints for disobedience to law enforcement. Five mobile phones and one tablet were also taken.
The operation began last Tuesday night, September 16th, as part of the police forces’ months-long attempts to “combat” these practices. Since September of last year, over 320 interventions have been conducted out, not just on Cuarzo Street, but also on other nearby streets such as Esmeralda and Olivino.
In addition to cracking down on illicit street vending, the Local and National Police filed several traffic violation reports and immobilised several vehicles believed to be of unlawful origin.
According to a statement from Alicante City Council, officials evicted an unlawful tent colony from the area months ago after receiving complaints from homeowners about its safety and cleanliness.
The coordination of security forces to control illegal street vending, noise, and cleanliness was one of the topics discussed last Monday at the Local Security Council meeting at city hall, which was chaired by the city’s mayor, Luis Barcala, and attended by the deputy government delegate, Juan Antonio Nieves, as well as other officials and police commanders.
Interventions on the Coastal Facade
Along similar lines, the Local Police conducted over 120 interventions against illicit street vending along the city’s waterfront this summer, in collaboration with the National Police and the Port Police.
On July 22nd, detectives destroyed 2,000 kilos of counterfeit goods confiscated since Easter, which amounted to 408 police intervention files, in the municipal dump. These materials were kept at the Fox Unit’s premises. 720 soccer jerseys, 206 bags and handbags, 52 pieces of pants and 48 pairs of sneakers were damaged.
