Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport has faced significant departure delays as a result of a cyberattack that targeted many European airports’ boarding systems early this morning. Although the most major issues are concentrated in Brussels, London Heathrow, and Berlin, the Alicante airport has also had to postpone flights to directly affected destinations.
Delays in Brussels, Bucharest
Tui Fly’s trip to Brussels, which was supposed to depart at 9:20 a.m., was delayed by more than four hours because it couldn’t take off until 1:30 p.m. The delay was caused by overcrowding at the Belgian airport, which paralysed the digital baggage handling system.
Another service disrupted at the Alicante terminal is the Wizz Air flight to Bucharest, which was due to depart at 10:00 a.m. but did not leave until around 12:00 p.m. after more than two hours of waiting.
The situation in Alicante compared to the rest of Europe
Compared to the pandemonium at Heathrow, Berlin, and Brussels, where thousands of passengers are still detained in long lines, the impact in Alicante is minor and under control for the time being. However, Aena warns that additional disruptions to aviation travel may occur throughout the day, depending on how the scenario unfolds at European airports.
Valencia is less affected
The impact was less severe at Manises Airport (Valencia), where just two aircraft to the United Kingdom encountered minor delays of 25 to 30 minutes. Both were bound for London Stansted and the East Midlands, two places where the cyberattack has had the greatest impact on traffic.
Warning for passengers
Police and European airports acknowledged that the hack targeted a North American provider of digital boarding systems, prompting operations to be rescheduled in numerous European capitals.
