Janet Fison loves to dance. She was a professional who handled her job exceptionally well. At 75, she still sparkled and performed at senior citizen gatherings in Jacarilla (Alicante). Her friends and neighbours still miss her dancing, even more than 110 days after she went missing.
On May 30th, the strange disappearance of the British woman hit the small village of just over 2,000 people like a bolt out of the blue.
It’s a tranquil place where British and other Europeans live happily with long-time natives, with communication being the main issue.
Janet was well-known in Jacarilla, a small community. She had been completely integrated since moving in with her husband in 2007.
Only a few posters on walls and at restaurants now feature her image. The possibility of finding her alive has decreased over the course of the past 16 weeks.
One of the shops displaying her image is one of the town’s pizzerias, the Englishwoman’s favourite and most recent dining destination.
José Luis, the owner, knew Janet well and said “The same night she vanished, she was here for supper with her husband. The photo circulating depicts her paying for the dinner. She arrived every day. “They even celebrated their 50th anniversary here,” she adds.

The father confesses that the situation was “very difficult” and that he spent hours looking for her near the Segura River, where she had last been seen.
Disappearance
The pair live near the Jacarilla football pitch. Several dirt roads go along the riverbed, around 100 metres away.
JaNet usually walked around that region, but her behaviour that night was unusual.
“It will not leave my mind. “I noticed she was dizzy, but I attributed it to the two glasses of wine she had,” he recalls.
The pair brought home potatoes and aioli for dinner. The wife was cooking them in the kitchen when she informed her husband that she had a headache.
He took over cooking so she could relax, and when he took away the dishes, he vanished, leaving the door unlocked.
Without any documentation, money, or a farewell message, she started walking towards the river and the nearby town of Benejúzar. A woman jogging noticed her and returned to find her laying on the ground at 8:40 p.m.
She asked if she was all right, and Janet said, “Good, good.” That was the last time she was seen. The Mayor of the municipality, Andrés Moñino, stated, “It’s as if the earth had swallowed her up.”
“It is a really mysterious phenomenon. People enquire, and we have no idea what to say. Moñino concedes that while the inquiry is being handled by the Judicial Police, a positive outcome is not envisaged at this time.
The husband is a double sufferer
Her husband is “dead in life,” José Luis laments. They’d known one other since they were teenagers because she was a dancer and he worked in stage and lighting installation, according to the restaurant owner.
In addition to the loss, the man has to cope with some of his neighbours’ suspicious looks.
José Luis claims that “humans are really nasty. Some others claim he killed and dismembered her. Others claim that she left with someone else. How could she leave without a passport or anything?
The most plausible explanation for the woman’s death is that she became disoriented or had a health problem and fell somewhere along the river’s banks or into it.
However, the failure of her own search, that of her husband, that of the entire town, and the large deployment of the Guardia Civil casts doubt on the woman’s friend.
“I have been thinking about it a lot. I believe someone took her since they spotted her lying there. It was the final of the pigeon racing competition, and individuals frequently drink and drive in those area to dodge checkpoints,” he believes.
“Her husband is still looking for her,” she adds. The British father hasn’t stopped looking for her; his children can scarcely see him, and he has spent countless hours in the river. He’s even purchased fishing rods equipped with cameras to record underwater footage and look for his wife so that she can be properly buried.
However, their trips, like their hopes, diminish over time.”I have been thinking about it a lot. I believe someone took her since they spotted her lying there.
