According to sources close to the case, the woman strangled in Benidorm welcomed the woman detained for the crime into her house just four days earlier. The 63-year-old woman was imprisoned on Saturday, September 20th, after appearing before a court. She elected to exercise her right not to testify at an appearance, just as she had done in the police station after her detention. Although the accused woman handed herself in and confessed to the crime, she has chosen to keep silent in front of the police and the judge. According to sources, she may request to be summoned again to explain what happened that night to the investigative committee once she has recovered from the shock of the incident.
The incident occurred on the night of September 17th, in the home of the detained and the victim, both British nationals living in Benidorm’s Rincón de Loix neighbourhood. The two women had moved to the resort city rather than visiting as tourists. According to sources, the inmate was looking for an apartment in Benidorm, so a friend offered to let her stay with her until she found one. Initially, it was to be a short stay, at least until early October. However, tensions soon erupted between the two. On the fourth day of living together, the victim was strangled with a vacuum cleaner cable. The reasons behind the argument have not been revealed. The only people present at the time were the admitted attacker and the victim. The Rincón de Loix district of Benidorm has a considerable British population, with residential developments, real estate companies, supermarkets, and entertainment venues catering to this demographic.
Statement from a witness
She allegedly used the cable to suffocate her to death. When the woman realised what she had done, she called a friend to explain what had happened and seek guidance. This friend suggested she turn herself in to the police, and she called the emergency services to report what had happened. On Saturday, this woman testified as a witness in the on-call court, describing what occurred that night. The woman did not directly witness the crime, but it was to her that the defendant confessed what had occurred. After the witness contacted the police, the routine for violent deaths was implemented. Medical services were unable to save her life. At the time of the intervention, the cord was still around her neck.
Given the gravity of the situation, the Prosecutor’s Office requested that the detainee be remanded into custody. It has also been observed that, because she is not a first-time offender, the suspect has no known residence, and she is thought to be a flight risk. The woman is still reeling from what happened, which is why the defence has decided to propose that she keep silent. In the coming weeks, she may wish to appear in court again to explain the reasons for the argument and the circumstances surrounding the strangulation. Meanwhile, the Forensic Science Investigation Department will provide the court with crime scene findings and autopsy results. The cable used to suffocate the victim will also be analysed to detect any DNA traces or fingerprints on its surface.
As previously reported, the woman was remanded in detention without bail last Saturday on suspicion of homicide. The matter has been assigned to the Benidorm Investigative Court No. 2, which must now conclude its investigation and put it to trial.
