A 39-year-old man has been arrested in Alicante for allegedly scamming eight elderly victims, ages 70 to 82, of over 30,000 euros. He offered to assist them whenever they used bank ATMs.
According to the National Police, this fraud approach, known as “seeding,” enabled him to gain 28,587 euros from victims deemed susceptible due to their age, with 18,680 of those stolen from a single person.
The strategy involved addressing elders at the ATM and proposing they utilise contactless payment options rather than placing their cards into the slot. At this point, he would explain how to do it and use the physical proximity to monitor how they typed their PIN number, before exchanging the card.
When he could, he would withdraw as much cash as possible from ATMs and make purchases in stores. He also made substantial transfers from one of the victims to an account he had formed under a fictitious name, using bogus papers to do so, which is a kind of document falsification.
The inmate, who has previously been taken before the Benidorm courts, was living in the El Albir district of the municipality of l’Alfàs del Pi. At the time of detention, he was carrying a forged driver’s license from another nation.
