Like in other towns across the country, thousands of people have protested in downtown Alicante to show their support for the Palestinian people and to say that they completely condemn the “terrible genocide perpetrated” by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in Gaza.
The Solidarity Network Against the Occupation of Palestine (RESCOP) called for this demonstration, which started just after 6:00 p.m. on the steps of the Jorge Juan and will end at Alicante City Hall Square. The protesters also “demand” that the “arms trade and the trade of military and security technology with Israel” stop.
The protesters used different banners and slogans to call for “immediate action” to open a humanitarian corridor and demanded the “total severance of diplomatic, institutional, economic, and cultural relations with Israel.” They also showed “full support for the legal demands against Israel” and supported the work of the International Criminal Court “to try Israeli leaders for genocide and war crimes.” There were also chants of solidarity for the people on the flotilla who were stopped by the Israeli Army this week while they were trying to bring humanitarian aid to the Gaza coast. It is important to mention that on Thursday, some 500 people gathered in Muntanyeta Square to call for the quick release of the activists who are being jailed in Israel.
The platform “Alacant for Palestine” organised the protest. It was designed to bring together local groups to fight against the slaughter in Gaza and take action together. Under . , more than twenty groups, organisations, political parties, and social groups have come together. The platform includes the University Assembly for Palestine of Alicante (AUPA), Compromís Alacant, CCOO L’Alacantí-les Marines, Esquerra Unida del País Valencià, or Movimiento Sumar PV, as well as a number of neighbourhood groups and social and environmental organisations.
