The Guardia Civil has arrested a 38-year-old man after seizing more than 22 kilos of marijuana hidden inside two metal boxes he was transporting in his car, according to the Alicante Command . The operation took place during a traffic stop on the AP-7 motorway near the municipality of Orihuela .
Last September, officers from the Torrevieja Guardia Civil Traffic Detachment , while conducting a speed and road safety operation on the AP-7 near Orihuela, stopped several vehicles. While identifying the driver of one of the vehicles, the officers observed a large box wrapped in clear plastic in the back seat and another box with similar characteristics in the trunk. Given the discovery, the driver’s attitude, and the presence of a bag containing clothing that gave off a strong odour of marijuana, the officers conducted a more thorough search of the vehicle.
Sealed boxes
Because the boxes were metal and tightly sealed with several locks , tools were required for their controlled opening. Furthermore, 1,340 euros in cash were also found during the examination of the suspect vehicle .
They found 21 vacuum-packed bundles of marijuana within the crates, which weighed a total of 22.650 kilogrammes. The police took the car, the drugs, and the money that were all going to a distant country.
The person who was arrested for drug trafficking and charged with a crime against public health was sent to Orihuela’s Investigating Court No. 3, which authorised his release with the implementation of preventive measures.
