Hotel Boutique Isla de Tabarca, run by brothers Luis and Carlos Castillo, has won the right to run the kiosk that used to be the historic “Peret” ice cream shop. The Alicante City Council’s contracting committee quickly accepted the ranking of the bids that were submitted on Wednesday, October 29th. The bid from the company stated above came in top with a score of 90 points at the end of the review procedure.
As soon as the six prospective bidders stated how much money they were willing to pay, Hotel Boutique Isla de Tabarca had an edge. As this publication stated, their proposal was the highest, at more over 4 million euros (€4,023,523.38), compared to the €3,213,123.30 submitted by a joint venture made up of Sensai Restauración SLU from Alicante and Mundaka Helados SL from Petrer. The quality of the handmade goods in these six proposals still remained to be rated, which was worth 10% of the score. The Castillo family’s company had a well-known workshop that made ice cream and granita items for them. So, in the end, their plan got a score of 73.57, which is more than 15 points more than the second-ranked one, which was the alliance of Sensai and Mundaka.
Because of this, the Castillo brothers’ company is ready to run the kiosk for an initial period of seven years, with the option to extend it for two more three-year periods, for a total of 13 years. The Governing Board still needs to approve the deal at a meeting before it can go into effect, though. This process could be done in two weeks, so the kiosk could reopen around the end of November or the beginning of December, unless the new concessionaire asks for more time to make changes to the building.
The kiosk, which is at the northern end of the Explanada promenade, takes up 39 square metres. It has a metal frame and big windows that are divided by stainless steel pillars. Three of its four sides have beige electric awnings. The only thing that can be done is to run a café or ice cream shop without a kitchen. You can cook meals on a griddle, toaster, and oven, but you can’t make smoke. The winning bidder will be in charge of doing all the work needed to fix and restore the kiosk and its facilities, both inside and out. If you want to use the outside of the kiosk for seats, you will need to fill out a new concession application and pay the fees that are listed in the tender criteria.
