A 25-year-old man who wanted to jump from a third-floor balcony caused a lot of stress for the National Police and firefighters in Alicante yesterday afternoon. The young man, who had allegedly attacked his mother and sister earlier, stayed on the balcony for more than two hours. The National Police negotiator finally got him to come down.
He was escorted to a hospital and then to the Alicante Provincial Police Station, where he spent the night in jail for domestic violence. The young man, who was from Algeria, had been using narcotics before the encounter with his family.
The event took place on Calle Granada in Alicante, next to Lo Morant Park, just before 6:00 p.m. Emergency services were called because a young man had attacked his mother and sister and was threatening them with a knife.
The National Police sent out several Citizen Security units, and the Fire Prevention, Extinction, and Rescue Service (SPEIS) sent out a ladder truck that also carried the big inflatable mattress. It was put under a balcony where the young man who had threatened to jump from the third floor had barricaded himself.
The young man was very upset, so the National Police sent a “negotiator” from the Alicante Provincial Judicial Police Brigade to the location. The talks with the young man went on for more than two hours and ended satisfactorily, with the man giving up.
The National Police first brought him to the Doctor Balmis General Hospital in Alicante to get a sedative. Later, they transported him to the cells of the Provincial Police Station as a suspect in domestic violence.
