Police and court sources have said that seven people have been arrested in connection with the stabbing of a 17-year-old in Benidorm. The man was stabbed seven times and is doing well. He had been in several confrontations and arguments with his attackers in the days before the attack. This is the second time that a group of young people in the province has been arrested for gang attacks. In early October, there was another brawl near the Magma nightclub in Alicante. This time, a group attacked a young man and hurt his head. Three of the people who were accused of attacking were sent to jail in that case.
Four of the people who were arrested are juveniles, and they are all 17 years old, the same age as the victim. Two of the adults who were detained are 18 years old and one is 37 years old. Over the weekend, all of them went to court, both at the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office in Alicante and at the duty court in Benidorm. Three of the youngsters, one of whom is a girl, have been sent to a juvenile prison centre. The three adults have also been held in jail. The prosecutor only asked for custody for one of the minors because it was unclear how involved they were in the incidents. Because of this, the Public Prosecutor’s Office only asked for a restraining order. The people who were detained are suspected of trying to kill someone, being a member of a criminal organisation, and robbing someone with violence.
Sources said that the stabbing was caused by a fight between the victim and the person who is said to have attacked him. They had had multiple run-ins in the past several weeks. The stabbing was the last result of this growing tension.
People with hoods
On October 26th around 10 p.m., the event took place in a picnic spot close to the Foietes neighbourhood. The victim was with companions when the people who are now in jail, wearing hoods, showed up out of nowhere and attacked him. Police sources said that even though several people were around at the time, the attackers were just for the victim.
The attackers surrounded the group and started throwing bottles and stones at them. The inquiry shows that the young man who was hurt had fought with his attacker several times in the days leading up to the incident. The attackers went for him when they saw him in the park. They went up to the young man and started to hit him. In the end, one of them took out a knife and stabbed him seven times. His companions took him to a health centre to get help for his injuries. From there, he was moved to the Marina Baixa Regional Hospital in La Vila Joiosa, where he had surgery. Sources also said that some of his companions were hurt by stones, although none of them were the intended targets of the attack.
The reasons for the attack are still being looked into and are not yet known. There is a lot of evidence that the two guys have been fighting for a long time, and things have been getting worse over the past few weeks. The victim is from Algeria, and the attackers are from Colombia. The two had fought before, and the alleged attacker even snatched the victim’s phone not long ago. Police have ruled out the phone theft as the cause of the fight, saying it was just another fight in a long queue of them. There is no proof that they planned to meet there that night to fight. The people who are accused of attacking the victim saw him at the event and chose to go after him. The matter is being handled by the Violent Crime Unit (UDEV) at the Benidorm Police Station. The police have detained the people who were involved in the incident and the person they think stabbed someone.
The officers have been talking to witnesses and suspects to help them figure out what transpired during the big fight that night. Attorney Edmundo Cortés, who is representing the juveniles who were arrested in connection with the fight, said that the inquiry has not been able to figure out what many of the people involved did during the events.
A different fight
This is the second big fight between young people in the province of Alicante that has led to pretrial arrest in less than a month. The National Police arrested three young males between the ages of 18 and 20 and a 17-year-old juvenile in Alicante. They are suspected of attacking an 18-year-old near the Magma nightclub in the Albufereta neighbourhood. The judge said that the three adults should stay in jail since their behaviour was more like that of animals. These detentions before trial are meant to warn other young people who get into fights about what can happen to them in court.
