The Generalitat has opened a new car park in the Vega Baja after spending 645,000 euros to encourage carpooling. The shape of the car park is meant to look like an artichoke in honour of the region’s agricultural history and the festivals and events that take place around the jewel of the orchard.
There are signs, road markings, landscaping, and lights in the 16,800 square metre interchange area that is shared between Daya Nueva and Almoradí. It also provides enough for 131 cars to park, some of which will be set aside for those with limited mobility. New plantings have also been added to the vegetation, which makes the new public space fit in better with the terrain.
The CV-912 road connects to the AP-7 and is the main road that connects Almoradí, Daya Nueva, and the remainder of the Vega Baja. It strengthens the local road network and makes it easier for thousands of people to get around every day.
Traffic count data from 2023 shows that this road sees an average of 3,714 vehicles each day. It is often used to get to Almoradí, Rafal, Dolores, and other towns in the region, as well as to get to the AP-7 highway (Alicante – Cartagena).
Next steps
The Generalitat has now set up five car-sharing facilities in the province of Alicante. This project will help make travel more efficient and lower the emissions that come from daily travels. Soon, new initiatives like the one planned for Rafal will start.
There is also one adjacent to the roundabout on the CV-930 road in Orihuela. It contains 56 parking places, some of which are set aside for individuals with limited mobility. It is on a 3,600 square metre public domain property that has signs, beacons, gardens and lights.
The Consell says that this is just one more example of its promise to keep building useful infrastructure that fits in with its surroundings and makes mobility in the Valencian Community safer, more efficient and more sustainable.
Getting around

Vicente Martínez Mus, the Second Vice President for Recovery, Environment, Infrastructure, and Territory, visited the facility this Friday. He said it is now fully operational to “improve regional mobility by providing a safe, orderly, and accessible point to facilitate the shared use of the vehicle.”
Martínez Mus said that this parking lot “is at a strategic road junction” and “will be a place for drivers to meet and share a car to get to work.”
The Generalitat said that this will help with “more orderly and sustainable mobility” by giving people a safe spot to switch cars as they go to and from work and occasionally a place to rest.
These kinds of spaces are being built in big cities and will slowly become an option for getting about. “This format is useful, practical, and economical for getting around every day from homes to major traffic hubs like industrial parks, university zones, and cities without having to use individual vehicles,” Martínez Mus said.
The second vice president was with Javier Sendra, the regional secretary for Infrastructure and Transport; María José Martínez Ruzafa, the general director of Land Transport Infrastructure; and the mayors of the area.
