A fire that started at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday November 13th killed a three-year-old child in the municipality of Las Gabias (population 23,400) in the province of Granada, which is only 15 minutes from the city of Granada. Around 5:15 p.m., the 061 Emergency Service got a call about a fire on Calle San José in Las Gabias. The city’s firefighters were sent right away, and when they got to the house, they were told that a family with young children resided there. According to city sources, three siblings, ages 2, 3, and 4, were involved. Some witnesses said the fire was really fierce, so the firefighters went inside to save everybody who was inside. They were able to get the mother and one of the kids out. They later found the body of the middle child.
The Guardia Civil’s first few hours of investigation are spent figuring out what started the fire and who was in the house at the time. There were five family members in the house: a couple and their three children. When emergency services (061) first called, they said that an adult and two children were stuck upstairs in the residence, and one of the children was hurt. But investigators are still trying to figure out who was in the residence because witness testimonies don’t agree.
Municipal reports say that the family had just been in Las Gabias for a few months and arrived from Jaén. They fit in well with the community, and each of their kids went to a separate school: the two-year-old went to nursery, and the three- and four-year-olds went to primary school.
After the firefighters, the Civil Guard, paramedics, and local police showed up. The family’s house was apart from the rest of the town, and Javier Bravo, the town’s first deputy mayor, said that “the ground floor is completely burned and the upper floor has sustained extensive damage.”
