The Mayor, Noelia Arroyo, said that Antonio Navarro Selfa, who will lead this team and is “one of the leading professionals in Real Estate Law in our country,” is offering two important tips for renting a home without the risk of it becoming a squatting case. This is to mark the start of a new legal assistance service in the Municipal Housing Office.
Selfa says that the matter is complicated, but “to rent a home, which is what I do most of the time in my office, the first thing you have to do is an analysis of who you are renting it to.”
The landlord needs to make sure that the tenant is safe, either through the tenant themselves or through the City Council, which also offers a safe rental service. He says, “Use either of these options to make sure you pay your rent.”
The Municipal Housing Office runs the secure rental program, which helps owners who make their houses accessible for social housing. The City Council’s insurance policy and the contract with the owner make sure that coverage is available in case of non-payment, vandalism, or any other issue.
Lastly, Navarro Selfa says that “the best way to keep a tenant and landlord safe is to follow the Urban Leases Law and what the housing law says about rights and duties.”
The lawyer ends by saying, “That’s the safest way to do it.” He adds, “It’s not about renting out a flat at random, but maybe it’s time to stop for a little longer because of the circumstances we all know.”
Arroyo says that it is vital to train local police officers on how to handle situations of home occupation and how to work with social services when someone is vulnerable in order to protect and help homeowners.
