The Local Governing Board has approved allowing business to take place on certain Sundays and public holidays in 2026. They have also suggested a number of changes to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism to make some important holidays in Elche, like Good Friday or Easter Sunday, better.
The spokesperson for the Local Governing Board, Inma Mora, has indicated that they are proposing to the Regional Ministry to replace April 3rd and 5th, Good Friday and Easter Sunday , as holidays on which shops can open, given their special importance and high tourist traffic, with April 6th and 13th, the first and second Mondays of Easter Monday. They also want stores to be closed on August 15th and October 12th, but open on Sunday, August 16th and Sunday, October 11th.
So, in 2026, the following holidays would be allowed for business in Elche:
– January 4, 2026 – Sunday. Three Kings Campaign.
– January 11, 2026 – Sunday. Winter Sales.
– April 6, 2026 – Easter Monday (by substitution).
– April 13, 2026 – Saint Vincent’s Monday or “Mona Monday” (by substitution).
– July 5, 2026 – Sunday. Summer Sales.
– August 16, 2026 – Sunday. Accumulation of holidays. (disabling – maintaining the proposed days of the Ministry).
– October 11, 2026 – Sunday. Accumulation of holidays. (disabling – maintaining the proposed days of the Ministry).
– November 29, 2026 – Sunday. Christmas Campaign.
– December 13, 2026 – Sunday. Christmas Campaign.
– December 20, 2026 – Sunday. Christmas Campaign.
– December 27, 2026 – Sunday. Three Kings Campaign.
The project got the go-ahead to make a small change to the General Plan that would let more plants grow in the areas of high and medium density developable land.
The council also passed Amendment No. 46 to Article 169 of the Elche General Plan during the meeting this Thursday. This amendment lets the number of floors in high- and medium-density developable land sectors go up. This change allows for the establishment of open building sectors with higher buildings and a smaller footprint. This will create more open spaces with green areas without changing the building allowance for the plot.
This change doesn’t have a big effect on the environment or on things that are part of our natural or cultural heritage. This only impacts places where urban development hasn’t finished yet and where the land is allocated for high and medium density. In line with Article 169, the maximum number of stories permissible in high and medium density zones will be as follows:
– Code 31. High-density residential area with a maximum of 8 floors.
– Key 32. Medium-high density residential area with a maximum of 7 floors.
– Key 33. Medium-low density residential area with a maximum of 4 floors.
– Key 36a. High-density tourist residential zone with a maximum of 6 floors.
– Key 36b and 36c. Medium density tourist residential area with a maximum of 4 floors.
The Local Governing Board has also approved amendment no. 47 to the General Plan, which allows for the change of land use in sector E-15. Mora said that this means changing the zoning of the land in the region between Calle Vicente Antón Selva, Paseo Oftalmólogo Fernando Soler, Calle Pintor Juan de Juanes , and Calle Miguel Miralles Jorge from educational and cultural to sports and recreational use. The new Puertas Coloradas sports complex will be built here.
