The Housing Authority built 15 flats in the Portón neighbourhood of the Old Town. They will be ready for residents in February, 18 years after construction began. The average rent will be around 120 euros per month. Mayor Luis Barcala said in a press release after visiting the development on Friday, “Alicante has finished the 15 apartments in the Portón area of the Old Town and is beginning the tenant selection process for those up to 35 years old from the housing pool, with the aim of handing over the keys in February.” This newspaper has already reported that the building business Gestaser Obras y Servicios SL finished the job for 1,413,398.33 euros.
Barcala went on a tour of the apartment block with Carlos de Juan, the councillor in charge of housing. People who live in the building and people who live nearby in Santa Cruz who have trouble getting around will be able to use the lift together. It also makes the city better by covering more than 1,300 square metres, linking Álvarez and San Bartolomé streets, and making a new plaza. There are 15 apartments in the residential programme. One of them, on the ground level, is set up for shared or assisted living for those with limited mobility and may hold up to eight people. There are four double bedrooms in this apartment, which has a usable space of 115 square metres.

It also features 14 open-plan apartments, each with around 33 square metres of usable space, and a patio that is about seven square metres. Two of these flats are wheelchair-accessible. There is also a communal area that is 64 square metres and a laundry room. The building has a B energy rating, and the construction business will take care of it for the next three years.
Barcala said that “once the works are received by the City Council, the process of selecting tenants up to 35 years of age will begin through the census of applicants of the Municipal Program for the Emancipation of Young People with the aim that the keys can be handed over, once all the previous requirements have been met, in February.
De Juan also said that the Patronato is on track to finish building the other social housing project for young people in San Gabriel who want to be independent by next summer. This project will turn the old teachers’ mansion in the San Gabriel neighbourhood into 14 apartments. The project will cost the Alicante City Council €1,380,637.51.
The mayor also said that “housing policies are a top priority for the governing team.” That’s why, in addition to the housing developments managed by the Housing Authority, we have set aside five plots of land to build 220 subsidised housing units under the Generalitat’s Vive Plan. We are also encouraging land acquisition and new developments with the goal of building more than 6,000 homes, 40% of which will be publicly subsidised. Barcala also said, “New neighbourhoods like Nueva Albufereta and Las Lomas del Garbinet will be built, with a thousand homes planned for each. There will also be new projects like Parque Central, which will have about 1,500 more homes, among other things.”
