Children under the age of fifteen will ride Elche city buses for free until December 31st, 2026. The extension of a measure that intends to relieve the financial strain on families and enable the everyday mobility of children and teenagers has been confirmed by the City Council for the upcoming year.
Public transport subsidies are emerging as a crucial instrument for encouraging sustainable behaviour at a young age.
In addition to decreasing the use of private vehicles, facilitating bus access also enhances equal opportunities and fosters youth autonomy, particularly in light of rising living expenses.
Elche City Council reiterates its dedication to accessible and socially conscious mobility in this regard. Students, youth and frequent users of municipal public transport will all benefit from a complete package of savings, which includes free travel for children under the age of fifteen.
Children under 15 will be able to ride the city bus for free through 2026 thanks to the provision. The municipal Mobility Card, which can be obtained at any OMAC office or via the electronic headquarters of City Hall, is required in order to use this free service.
Children under 15 who are not registered residents of Elche will also be able to profit from this program, according to Claudio Guilabert, the Councillor for Public Services.
According to the Elche City Council, in these situations, they will be given a temporary card that will be valid until the conclusion of the subsidy term.
Discounts for loyal customers
Free travel for children is just one aspect of the subsidy strategy. Users who are between the ages of 15 and 25 will be eligible for a 50% discount on the Bus Lliure (Free Bus) throughout 2026.
There will also be a 40% decrease in the price of regular, monthly, and large family passes for other passengers.
Ángel Luis Andreu, the operations manager for Avanza Elche, notes that the City Council has chosen to absorb the 20% additional municipal contribution that supplements the Ministry’s subsidy in order to preserve the discounts, even though it was not required in this case.
In 2026, new tariffs
The normal 10-trip pass will cost €5.05 when these savings are applied. The monthly membership will cost €16.30, while the large family pass will cost €3.85 for ten visits as well.
For people between the ages of 15 and 26, the Bus Lliure will cost 10 euros every three months.
The social aspect of these measures is something that the city government is adamant about.
The City Council’s 2026 strategy is defined by the Councillor for Public Services’ emphasis that “this is a social investment, since there is nothing more cross-cutting than mobility,” as Guilabert emphasises.
