Denia Local Police devised and oversaw the construction of smart pedestrian crossings as part of their continuous traffic safety enhancement initiative.
With a total investment of €157,211 for 2026, these solar-powered crossings include presence detectors that activate the illumination system—including lit vertical signs and LED reflectors in the ground—when a pedestrian approaches, boosting motorist awareness.
The project intends to add 46 crossings in 38 critical places throughout the municipality this year. The first phase of installation began in recent weeks, with 14 smart crossings already installed in 12 priority sites. The crossings are now being tweaked and configured, and they will be operational shortly.
Priority has been given to school zones, areas with high traffic volume (Avenida Miguel Hernández, Joan Fuster, Alicante, Camí de Gandia, Montgó, Andalucía, and Calle Campotorres), and poorly lit areas such as the Les Marines road, Camí del Cementeri, Assagador de la Marjal, Camí Pou de la Muntanya, and Camí de Sant Joan, among others.
Javier Scotto, Councillor for Citizen Security, noted that “these smart pedestrian crossings will improve driver awareness by using illuminated signals to warn pedestrians.” Their location will be based on technical criteria such as crucial places or high traffic density. All of this is intended to improve traffic safety in our community.”
