Across the region, the feast of San Antonio Abad is being celebrated (you can read my other article to find out more)
The La Mata Irony: international Day of the Pig!
In a twist that highlights the rustic roots of Spanish culture, the village of La Mata celebrates San Anton with the International Pig Day. While the saint is the protector of animals, the tradition in the Vega Baja has always been tied to the mantanza that the traditional winter slaughter that sustained families for the year will happen on Sunday 18th January. This will occur at the Pena del Cochino where people will gather in the Plaza de Encarnacion Pujol at 12pm. They plan to distribute over 600kg of BBQ pork, along with wine, celery, and bread to hundreds of attendees. It’s always a lively, smoky and definitely ironic tribute to the animal that feeds the region.

Sunday Shopping Shutdown: La Zenia Goes Quiet
Take note: holiday season and the grace period for Sunday shopping is officially over. Starting this Sunday, January 18th, major shopping centres like la Zenia boulevard, Habaneras and other large retailers in the Valencia Community will be closed on Sundays until tourist season resumes. However, whilst the shops will be shut, the leisure and restaurant areas on the top floor usually remain open. This typically last till mid-June with a brief exception for Easter. If you need a new outfit or some food shopping then you’ll have to wait till Monday!

whether you’re out to get your pets a blessing or looking for a free pork sandwich, this weekend on the Costa Blanca is a masterclass in the regions unique ability to blend the sacred with the salty. From the high-energy acrobatics of Wilbur to the quiet aisles of a closed Zenia Boulevard, the transition from the Christmas rush to the traditional winter rhythm is now well and truly in full swing.
