The province of Alicante has been the site of a significant operation against money laundering networks centred on marijuana trafficking groups, which is under investigation by the National Court. According to judicial officials, nine people have been arrested and will face court in the coming hours. The Levante Special Response Group for Organised Crime (Greco) of the National Police conducted simultaneous searches around the province on Wednesday, September 10th. At least three searches were conducted in the cities of El Campello and Crevillent, as well as in El Bacarot, a rural Alicante region. Although the case is now sealed, judicial sources consulted by this newspaper indicated that it could be lifted in the coming hours.
The search in El Campello caused serious concern in the municipality because it took place just a few meters from the town’s coastal promenade. The highly armed and hooded officers came at the suspects’ residence at 6:00 a.m., causing chaos in the neighbourhood. The search took several hours, and police officers stayed at the scene until midday on Wednesday. According to sources consulted by this publication, only minor amounts of marijuana buds were discovered in the home, but there was a lot of documentation linking the suspects to the suspected money laundering schemes.
It’s from Europe
A couple from Eastern Europe was apprehended at the house. Some neighbours said they appeared prosperous. According to the same sources, the suspects were returning from a trip when the operation began, and police officers were waiting for them near the residence on Calle San Pedro in the town. The couple departed the house in handcuffs, while two minor children who resided with them were transported to police headquarters, most likely because there were no grownups available to care for them while their parents were held.
According to police sources, organised groups from Eastern Europe frequently use the province to cultivate marijuana, which they then export to their home countries, which do not have an adequate environment for production.
According to sources the El Greco investigation focusses on a large-scale marijuana trafficking network operating in the province of Alicante. However, investigators were not looking for massive stashes or hidden plantations, as is common in this type of operation, but rather attempting to disrupt the processes utilised to launder the revenues from the sale of these narcotics. The searches were primarily for paperwork rather than massive stashes. According to sources consulted by this publication, those arrested are likely to be taken before a court today, Friday September 12th, though it is unclear whether they will be hauled before the National Court or if the case will remain in Alicante courts.
