El Campello is not safe from a sort of vandalism that appears to be increasing across the country: people setting fire to trash and recycling bins on purpose. Recently, security and firefighters had to deal with two different problems on Avenidas Jijona and Els Furs.
A citizen called the local police to say that smoke was coming from a paper recycling receptacle. The police on patrol who went to Avenidas Jijona tried to put out the fire with their extinguishers, but the flames were too strong. Firefighters were able to put it out in the end. Not long after that, there was another fire in containers on Els Furs Avenue, right across from the Clot de L’Illot high school.
A Guardia Civil patrol saw a young man who fit the description given by neighbours, after being told about the situation. The police intercepted him, and he confessed to lighting the fires. Then, they took him to the Guardia Civil station to be questioned.
A few hours later, FCC, the company hired to clean the streets, removed the burned remains and put in new containers.
